What is OKAPI Secretosan?

OKAPI Secretosan is a pure herbal blend that we have specially pelletised to ensure it is as dust-free as possible. With cut herb mixtures, it can occasionally happen that dust (e.g., from pollen or crushed leaves) is inhaled while eating, which can trigger coughing fits, especially in horses with sensitive airways. The herbs used in Secretosan support the natural regulatory function of the respiratory tract mucous membranes in cases of dry, so-called “irritant cough.” This is usually triggered by the inhalation of dust, as can occur when eating dry hay. However, some horses have such sensitive airways that even the smallest dust particles in the air may be enough to cause them to develop dry coughing fits without any apparent cause.

When a horse reacts this sensitively with its airways, it is often due to an underdeveloped natural mucus barrier that protects the mucous membranes from dust particles by binding them and transporting them upwards. Continuous irritant coughing can then lead to inflammatory processes in the respiratory mucous membranes, similar to what we experience ourselves when we still have a lingering cough after recovering from a cold. Therefore, it is important to support the natural function of the respiratory mucous membranes and rebuild this mucus barrier so that the airways can calm down sustainably.

If the horse’s cough is accompanied by nasal discharge, which can be seen as yellow mucus spots on the ground after coughing or yellow, viscous “snot” running from the nose, we strongly recommend consulting a competent therapist or veterinarian, as this is usually indicative of an infectious condition. Our partner Sanoanimal is happy to help find an appropriate therapist: https://wissen.sanoanimal.de/therapeuten. In these cases, we strongly advise against feeding our Secretosan until the causes of the respiratory issue have been clarified and appropriately addressed by the therapist.

How do I calculate the correct dosage for my horse?

To calculate the appropriate dose for OKAPI Secretosan, the following steps can be followed:

Determine the horse’s weight: The horse’s weight can be determined by either weighing it, measuring with a tape measure, or using apps such as the BCI app from our partner Sanoanimal (available for free on Google Play and the Apple Store).

Follow the feeding recommendation: The general recommendation for OKAPI products is based on a 600 kg horse.

The recommended daily amount is 2-3 ML per day (1 scoop = 16 g).

Adjust the dose: If the horse weighs, for example, 300 kg, the dose should be adjusted accordingly. The calculation would be: Daily dose (48 g) / 600 kg × Horse’s weight (300 kg) = Daily ration (24 g). This calculation method allows you to determine the appropriate amount.
