What are OKAPI Psyllium Seeds?

This refers to the whole seeds of the Indian Plantago (Plantago ovata), which have a strong swelling ability and become particularly slimy. Despite their swelling capacity, they can be given to horses that tend to have sluggish peristalsis or mild constipation. They are used in traditional folk medicine to support digestion, as they can expand the faeces and bind liquid in the intestines. We also recommend giving whole psyllium seeds when horses are prone to ingesting sand, for example, when hay is fed from the ground in the paddock or when pastures are heavily grazed, to support the physiological balance in the intestines. Whole psyllium seeds are similar to psyllium husks in terms of their physiological effect on digestion but are preferred by most horses over the husks. Additionally, there is evidence suggesting that whole psyllium seeds may support natural blood sugar regulation in horses, which has not been shown for the husks.

Whole psyllium seeds, like psyllium husks, have the property of swelling significantly when in contact with water. Therefore, it is generally recommended to soak them before feeding. However, considering the amount of water in the digestive tract, which in an adult horse ranges close to 100 litres between the stomach and anus, this is more of a precautionary measure. With such a large volume of water, it is unlikely that a small amount of unsoaked psyllium seeds or husks would cause digestive issues, as they only bind a relatively small part of this vast water quantity. However, it is important to adhere to the dosage recommendations and not offer them ad libitum.

How long should I feed OKAPI Psyllium Seeds ?

OKAPI Psyllium Seeds should not be fed continuously. We recommend a limited feeding period of 2-6 weeks, which can be repeated after a break of at least 2 weeks, if necessary.

How are OKAPI Psyllium Seeds fed?

OKAPI Psyllium Seeds can be directly integrated into the horse’s existing feed. OKAPI Psyllium Seeds can be soaked in plenty of warm water before feeding and allowed to swell for at least 15 minutes.

How do I calculate the correct dosage for my horse?

To calculate the appropriate dose for OKAPI PankrEMS forte, determine the weight of the horse. The horse’s weight can be measured by weighing, using a measuring tape, or with apps like the BCI App from our partner Sanoanimal (available for free in the Google Play and the Apple Store).

The general recommendation for OKAPI products is based on a 600 kg horse. The recommended daily amount is 1 mL (1 scoop = 10 g).

To adjust the dose: If the horse weighs 300 kg, the dose should be adjusted accordingly. The calculation is as follows: daily dose (10 g) / 600 kg × weight of the horse (300 kg) = daily ration (5 g). This method helps determine the appropriate amount.

Due to the higher content of trace elements, this supplement should only be fed up to 1% of the horse’s daily ration.
