What is OKAPI Liquorice Extract?

Liquorice – or the extract made from the root – has been used in traditional folk medicine to address various health issues associated with compromised mucous membranes. We particularly recommend Liquorice extract to support the natural gut environment, for horses with sensitive stomachs, and those prone to frequent respiratory issues. However, it is essential that affected horses are assessed by a qualified therapist or veterinarian to conduct a holistic analysis of the situation, address potential underlying causes, and create a tailored feeding plan for the horse in question.

Is OKAPI Liquorice Extract suitable for my horse?

OKAPI Liquorice Extract is suitable for adult horses of all ages and breeds, but it should not be given to horses prone to laminitis. Liquorice extract contains, among other substances, glycyrrhizin, which can affect the body’s cortisol and aldosterone balance. Cortisol, in particular, is suspected of potentially triggering laminitis in horses, although the connection is not entirely clear, and the mechanism is not yet scientifically proven. However, since we want to avoid health issues at all costs, we recommend being cautious and avoiding the feeding of liquorice extract to horses with a history of laminitis or those with sensitive hooves.

Can I combine OKAPI Liquorice Extract with other products?

OKAPI Liquorice Extract can be effectively combined with other products.

How long should I feed OKAPI Liquorice Extract?

Due to its effects, OKAPI Liquorice Extract should not be given for longer than two to three weeks consecutively.

How is OKAPI Liquorice Extract fed?

OKAPI Liquorice Extract can be directly incorporated into the horse’s existing feed and does not need to be boiled separately.

How do I calculate the correct dosage for my horse?

To calculate the appropriate dose for OKAPI Liquorice Extract, the following steps can be followed:

Determine the horse’s weight: The weight of the horse can be determined either by weighing it, measuring it with a tape measure, or by using apps such as the BCI app from our partner Sanoanimal (available for free on Google Play and the Apple Store).

Follow the feeding recommendation: The general recommendation for OKAPI products is based on a 600 kg horse.

The recommended daily amount is 1-2 ML twice a day (1 scoop = 2 g).

Adjust the dose: If the horse weighs, for example, 300 kg, the dose should be adjusted accordingly. The calculation would be: Daily dose (4 g) / 600 kg × Horse’s weight (300 kg) = Daily ration (2 g). This calculation method allows you to determine the appropriate amount.

What is included in OKAPI Liquorice Extract?

OKAPI Liquorice Extract contains: Liquorice root juice, dried and ground.

Analytical components and contents:
Starch: 21.9%
Total sugar: 20.3%

You are receiving pure (dried and ground) liquorice extract, to which no additional sugar has been added. However, the liquorice root is aptly named: it naturally contains sugar, which we have stated in accordance with feed law requirements.
